A Green Steel Future

Leveraging the South Australian Government’s vision, Greensteel Australia proposes a 70-hectare, state-of-the-art manufacturing and energy precinct in Newcastle, featuring Australia’s Largest 600 MW Green Hydrogen Plant, a 1.2 million tonne pa Direct Reduced Iron (H₂-DRI) facility, two Danieli Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs), and two next-generation rolling mills (Structural Steel, High-Speed Rail Mill and Rebar Mill) – expanding capacity to 2.5 times current levels in Australia.

With a total capital expenditure of $2.1 billion, this plan is expected to abate 2.4 million tonnes of carbon annually – advancing Australia’s net-zero targets – and create over 2,000 construction jobs plus 1,000 permanent roles.

As we embark on this transformative journey, we are dedicated to leading the charge toward a greener future for the steel industry.

The future of steel is green, and it starts here.

Doubled Capacity, Zero Carbon

Two next-generation rolling mills will produce 1.2 million tonnes of hot-rolled, carbon-free steel annually – 2.5 times Australia’s current output.

High-Efficiency Electric Arc Furnaces

Two Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs) use a highly efficient, flexible feed mix of Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) and scrap, eliminating CO₂ emissions.

Australia's Largest Green Hydrogen Plant

A 600 MW Green Hydrogen Plant will power our operations, representing Australia’s largest H2 facility.

Green Iron Production

A revolutionary 1.2 million tonne-per-year H2-DRI facility eliminates the need for coking coal and blast furnaces. This facility will produce GREEN IRON, the key ingredient for our EAFs.

Innovative Green Partnerships

The Australian Government’s Green Iron and Steel Strategy has laid a visionary foundation for industrial rejuvenation powered by renewables and hydrogen.

Our proposal aligns seamlessly with these goals, outlining a fast-tracked 600 MW hydrogen-based steelmaking hub in Newcastle – combining advanced H₂-DRI technology with EAF melting to minimise emissions and future-proof the region’s industrial base.

Greensteel Australia has completed the procurement stage and awarded the contract to Danieli, a global leader in green steelmaking technologies.

With a long-standing reputation for innovation, Danieli’s advanced solutions and commitment to sustainability align perfectly with our mission to decarbonise Australia’s steel industry.

Pioneering Green Technologies

At Greensteel Australia, innovation is at the core of our mission to revolutionise the steel industry and drive the transition to sustainable manufacturing.

Central to our innovation strategy is the development of green technologies that enable us to produce steel with a minimal carbon footprint. Our flagship project, the hydrogen-powered plant, exemplifies this commitment.

By leveraging the latest advancements in green hydrogen, we replace traditional fossil fuels with green energy, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Australia’s steelmaking process. This technology sets a new standard for sustainable steel production.

In addition to our hydrogen DRI plant, we are exploring other innovative technologies to further enhance the sustainability and efficiency of our operations. This includes electric arc furnaces powered by renewable energy, carbon capture and utilisation systems, and advanced data analytics to optimise production processes.
